Great for new interns

So you have finished med school. It is your first day on the wards. You have 3 patients to admit and another two to manage. Do you remember what orders to place for the nurses for that COPD patient? IV lines? Respirators? Medications? Labs?
Of course not. If your medical school was anything like mine, they spent more time focusing on which gene causes metalloproteinase pathology than how to admit a patient to the floor.
All of us, given the right amount of time, can read UpToDate, a textbook, and Wikipedia to learn how to work up a patient. But in the meantime four other patient's nurses are waiting for initial orders.
This book WON'T teach you how to differentiate between the various glomerularnephritides. It WILL speedily lead you through the initial admissions and workup for just about every imaginable condition so that you have time to dig deeper and work on the more interesting step of diagnosing.
The book is way overpriced for its tiny stature. But then, would you want it any bigger (or longer) when it already has all that is necessary at a glance? Get it. At a dollar a page (or thereabouts) it's still totally worth it!
"Medicine" was recommended to me by my intern, and I in turn recommend it highly to my med students.

If it's your first month, and there's no EMR...

If your hospital doesn't have computerized orders, this might actually be very useful. But if you have epic, cerner, etc, this is a bit much, and this kind of information is already kind of integrated into the EMR. Before we had a modern EMR, I found this book somewhat helpful, though when you've done admissions for a month, you'll know much more than is in the book.
