About the Author
Dr Janusek is an archaeologist interested in the development of complex societies and cities in the South American Andes. His theoretical interests include: human agency/identity, power relations, urbanism, space and place, ritual practice, and household archaeology. He has worked in the Bolivian highlands since 1987, conducting research principally focused on Tiwanaku civilization and its precursors. He currently directs an interdisciplinary research project at the sites of Khonkho Wankane and Iruhito in the southern Lake Titicaca Basin (see http://antiquity.ac.uk/ProjGall/janusek/janusek.html). His publications include: Craft and Local Power (Latin American Antiquity 10, 1999), Out of Many, One (Latin American Antiquity 13, 2002), Tiwanaku and its Precursors (Journal of Archaeological Research 12, 2004), Household and City in Tiwanaku (in Andean Archaeology, Helaine Silverman ed., Blackwell 2004), five chapters in Tiwanaku and its Hinterland Vol. II (Alan Kolata ed., Smithsonian Institution, 2003), and The Changing 'Nature' of Tiwanaku Religion (World Archaeology 38, 2006). His two books are Identity and Power in the Ancient Andes (Routledge, 2004) and Ancient Tiwanaku (Cambridge, 2008).

"The earliest reports of payments with cowrie shells were from China about 3,500 years ago."

The first thing I noticed on the first page was the heart-shaped English brass halfpenny token from 1665. I've seen a lot of coins, but had no idea that they could be in so many shapes. From the Ancient Chinese bronze hoe-shaped coin of the 6th century to the square Indian gold mohur of the 17th century, there is a coin for every taste and collection.

There is information on funny money, the first coins, paper money, how coins are made, how banknotes are made, forgery and fakes, money and trade, money in war, power, shared currencies, checks and plastic and coin collections. The countries features include ancient cultures, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and African countries.

"The name for a piggy bank comes from pygg, a type of clay used in Middle Ages to make pots for money and other thing. The idea to make banks in the shape of pigs probably came from the similarity of the words."

Great photos, interesting book

DK eyewitness books are some of the greatest non-fiction books around. The distinctive white background and high-quality photography gives this book an edge over any other nonfiction picture book. And -- these pictures are real! They're beautiful photos of all things related to money, accompanied by informative captions and text.
This book isn't the strongest in the series, but it is interesting, and the museum-quality pictures will have the reader involved to the end.

great for kids interested in money

This book is the perfect length for my 10yo who has a stock account and loves to learn about money, lots of info and pictures but enough length that at 10yo he is not bored. He reads at about 6th grade level, and this book is probably for 5th grade and up or would be too hard. Very nice illustrations/pictures with visual interest.

A Must Read for the Drone Hobbyist

This book will save you time and money. I am a newbie to flying drones but not to reviewing books. As a college professor, my job for 40 years was to write and critique books and manuscripts. Mark Smith has done an excellent job capturing the essence of the drone hobby in a brief, readable and enjoyable book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an overview of flying quadcopters and drones. Mark doesn't miss the essentials but he also doesn't provide extensive technical details that tend to turn off the average reader. I was able to read Quadcopters and Drones in an evening but have kept it my flight box for future reference. This should be in everyone's library who enjoys flying quadcopters and drones for pleasure or as a professional.

Droneology Explained!

An excellent beginner's guide. Well-illustrated with easy to understand descriptions of products, procedures, and lessons to avoid learning the hard way.

The author provides POC information at the back of the book; when he encourages his readers to contact him, he means it! I had a question regarding control movements for a specific flight maneuver and he replied to my email within hours, providing recommendations and additional insights.

I'd definitely recommend this easy-reading book to anyone beginning this hobby.

So you want to learn about Quads and Drones this the book to have.

If you are planning on getting into flying Drones and Quadcopters, this is the book to read. Mark explains everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about the subject. if you have read any of his metal detecting books then you are familiar with the way he writes. He will get down in the weeds when he explains something but he makes it all understandable and throws in some of his own experiences on what to do and what not to do. If you are into photography he goes into some detail about how you can use one of these for taking pictures and some of the better ways to do it. If you are into metal detecting you can use one for searching an area to see what the terrain is like that you will be hunting. I was not into drones or quadcopters until I read the book, I got about half through and started investigating getting one for myself. If you are not sure what kind to get for what ever application have no fear, Mark goes into each one and gives a good explanation for them. I highly recommend this book.

Like all my reviews, I'll preface by saying this is not a professional review by any means, but represents my own biased, subjective opinions.

I saw this on the shelf at by library randomly and it looked interesting. It's not a biography of Labov per se, sort of an overview of him and his work. This book was great. As a grad student in linguistics, I'm familiar with several things that Labov has done, but there was so much more that I didn't even realize was his. Things like hypercorrection and the observer's effect, which I feel like aren't even linguisticky terms. It's pretty amazing how much of his work touches every aspect of linguistics.

What I like about the beginning of the book was that it set the stage for what the field of linguistics was like before Labov came along. Dialectology was a thing, but variation was seen as a thing to overcome rather than something to study.

The following are my notes I took as I read along the book. Again, brief, biased summaries:

• Chapter 1: The Challenges of Labov—I read this but didn't take notes. Sorry.
• Chapter 2: Linguistics and sociolinguistics before Labov—If nothing else, this was a great a chapter on the history of sociolinguistics. It covers everything that's happened since the 1800s and leads it up to the 1960s and the problems that researchers were facing. There were methodological problems, and just conceptual things that weren't brought to light back then, which this chapter highlighted.
• Chapter 3: How to establish a field as a graduate student—This was a summary of the Martha's Vineyard study and the New York study, with commentary along the way of how the methodology was new. Apparently, Labov came up with the convention of using parentheses for sociolinguistic variables, slashes for phonemes, and brackets for phonetic realizations. He also came up with the idea of hypercorrection, based on his New York study. Also, there's a lot more to the study in New York than just the Fourth Floor part. And it was interesting to read.
• Chapter 4: A Variationist approach to language—Covered broadly what variationist sociolinguistics is.
• Chapter 5: Speech Styles and Discourse—This talked a lot about the sociolinguistic interview and why it was used to much to elicit informal speech. There have been criticisms though, and they are explained, with defense.
• Chapter 6: The "socio" of sociolinguistics—Talked about the key sociolinguistic variables that Labov and others have used, the problems with quantifying them, and general conclusions that have been made from Labov's work. Talked specifically about social class, gender, and ethnicity.
• Chapter 7: Labov as a historical linguist—This chapter talked about tracking sound changes over time and how Labov did it. It talks about push and pull chains and in general change across time.
• Chapter 8: African American English—This chapter was all about AAVE and what Labov has done with it. It gave some pretty racist pre-Labovian quotes from back in the day, and then some better ones that Labov did. It also told the story of Ann Arbor and Oakland, which was good to read. It ended with the fact that things are better generally today, but not that much better.
• Chapter 9: 50 years—Gave an overview of what the field of sociolinguistics looks like today. Talked about sociophonetics, corpus linguistics, and Eckert's waves. While not all fields of linguistics care about social factors (theoretical linguistics, for example), compared to 50 years ago, pretty much every one else is forced to acknowledge social factors in language now.

I'd recommend this book to any student of linguistics, and especially if they are interested in sociolinguistics or a similar subdiscipline. I thought it was great
