The 30th book in the New York Times bestselling series
In the aftermath of the Dropsite Massacre at Isstvan V, a battered and bloodied force of Iron Hands, Raven Guard and Salamanders regroups on a seemingly insignificant death world. Fending off attacks from all manner of monstrous creatures, the fractious allies find hope in the form of human refugees fleeing from the growing war, and cast adrift upon the tides of the warp. But even as the Space Marines carve out a sanctuary for them in the jungles of Pythos, a darkness gathers that threatens to consume them all...

and it is by far the worse in the series
By Blake Doelle
I've read every Horus Heresy book up to this one, and it is by far the worse in the series. It doesn't do much to add to the overall story shared with many other books, and the author really really likes to describe the same thing over and over again all throughout the book. Most books in the series almost have -too- many things happening at once and this one by far has the least. It gave a little bit of depth for the Iron Hands, but not much. For completions sake you could grab it, but only if. This book is quite skip-able in the grand scheme of the Heresy.

Spehss Mahreens vs Jungle, Boredom Triumphs!
By Corey B
After reading this book and pondering for a while (ok, a few minutes, if that), I'm not quite sure why it was written. Chronologically, it takes place during the Horus Heresy, and it was the events of the Heresy that started off the events covered in this book. Beyond that, it really serves as worse HH filler than any other book in the series so far, surpassing even "Unremembered Empire" in being utterly pointless and inane.
The characters are painfully flat, and the story never really develops beyond "random Iron Hands being angry while stomping through the jungle". There's some sort of warp...thing?...going on, evidently, a rather tame daemon, a Salamander and a Raven Guard (ostensibly to allow the summary to justify its claim of "combined forces"), and some singing human appetizers for when the big beasties get tired of crunchy Spehss Mahreens and want something slightly less damaging to the palate.
Poorly-written books aren't really a new thing in the Black Library, unfortunately, but the most damning thing about this particular book is that it doesn't fill in any gaps, it doesn't continue the story of any previous characters, and given the ending, isn't going to have any further effect on the Heresy. It seems like some editor decided that a book about the Iron Hands following the rather messy death of their halfwit primarch was necessary, pointed the author at a couple random words in the dictionary for plot development, and sent the draft straight to print. Unremembered Empire at least tells us where some of the Legions and primarchs were, but this book doesn't can't even claim to do that. It would have been much better as a short story in one of the collected anthology books, rather than a complete HH novel.

Superfluos
By R. Marcus Atihsamy
Gentle reader, are you familiar with the writing convention wherein the author will build up tension in a series of long, descriptive sentences? Where details and exposition are layered on, setting up a scene in which it is clear something pivotal is about to happen? The words pile up and the reader is primed for a big reveal. Then, the author will break from the previous loquaciousness of prose displayed thus far and punnctuate the action as with the following device.
A single short sentence.
When used sparingly, this can be very effective in entertaining the reader. When this technique is employed so often that it feels like it's appearing every other page, it wears a bit thin.
It doesn't help that this is a completely superfluous story that hardly merits inclusion in the Horus Heresy. It could have been a passable short story, but as a novel, this work flounders.
Still better than Battle for the Abyss though.
