perfect for those interested in linguistics

I had to read this for an introductory course in linguistic anthropology at Rutgers University. While I only took this class because it's required for my major in cultural anthropology, this book was a major help. Ahearn's writing style is very organized and easy to follow, breaking up the concepts into headings and subheadings so it's easy to take notes on the chapters.

She discusses many topics. A few are different research strategies for linguistic anthropologists, how speech communities may live among each other but are very different, and also how language isn't just about language but how it incorporates into culture and how each culture is largely based on the language.

Highly reccommended for anyone interested in linguistics

Really a fascinating and enjoyable introduction...

Yes, here is a keeper; what a fascinating realm of humanity, and what I fine introduction! I write software, and have a fascination with language, semiotics, "meaning making", so I read this just for fun, not part of a class. There are so many unexpected dimensions/realms here, most fascinating and illuminating, a college class would have been a treat. Aside from the subject area itself, she covered the material in a manner that flowed naturally throughout the book, mixing ideas and examples artfully, so the material just does not seem like textbook stuff. This is the most interesting book I've read in quite a while, and is a perfect first-look into the field. (Another great one is Semiotics; The Basics by Daniel Chandler)

I'd love to know what to read next on Linguistic Anthro, but I suspect this one will be tough to top in terms of pure enrichment and enjoyment.

Definitely better than most textbooks.

As a student, I personally loved the book as a textbook for class. The material was easy to understand, because she broke down hard concepts into easier terminology. I would definitely recommend it as an in class textbook. Easier to read than most textbooks, shorter than most textbooks, and definitely extremely light, which made it easier to carry around. My professor definitely used the book a lot, so there was no escaping it. I was glad she chose a book that did not make me want to scream every time I read it. If you are a professor, considering using this book for class, take it from a fellow student: Go for it!

Book 5, in the Grens & Sundkvist series

This book is by far from being short in fact it is close to 500 pages of intense reading. The plot is multi-faceted and it takes its merry time to spring into action but once started it crakes up tension and our engagement with the novel. Some entering midstream into this series may feel at a lost since the bleakly eccentric protagonist has a very heart wrenching past which it essential to know.

The novel deals with criminals in contemporary Sweden, the Police and Probation Officials who monitor these offenders, and the government who wants to use them as undercover operatives. The story unfolds primarily in the streets and apartments of Stockholm and in Aspsas prison, a fictional jail not too far from the city. We also have side trips to both Denmark and Poland.

The narrative shifts points of view from Ewert Grens, a Stockholm detective who runs covert operatives to mules who smuggle drugs from Poland to Piet Hoffman, the most valuable undercover operative working as a front man for security firm with Mafia ties and to Erik Wilson, his handler.

When a drug buy goes wrong and a Danish police is exposed and killed while on a sting Hoffman needs to extricates himself from the complicity in the murder and negotiate a deal with bureaucrats. But Grens determined effort to solve the case threatens to expose not only Hoffman but also officials from various agencies involved with the operation. Intriguing enough n’est-ce pas?….well, also a bit complicated…

With the many things going on it takes a demanding but well worth effort to absorb the refined narrative which is quite heavy-handed with information and to get used to the complex style. This book is gritty, violent and unnerving and once the action takes place it becomes exciting and eventually turns into a real page-turner.

Charleston, formerly Keeper of the Department of Ceramics & Glass, in the Victoria & Albert Museum writes a foreword for the text. Johnathan Matcham started his career as an apprentice wood and metal engraver. Later as a printing craft technologist he was involved in the development of rotary photogravure. He has since expanded his interest in glass, engraving mainly by the diamond point and flexible drive. Peter Dreiser served his trade apprenticeship at the Rheinbach School of Glass. He is a freelance glass engraver, specializing in copper wheel engraving, intaglio and relief work. He was awarded a Crafts Council Bursary in 1977 to tour the glass centres of Europe. He has undertaken many important commissions, and his work is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert and other British museums.

This is about the best glass engraving book I have. Although most of the techniques seem to be aimed at the experienced engraver, it has some excellent information & techniques for the hobbyist & is generally very interesting & useful. It has some good ideas for home-built equipment & an excellent, comprehensive bibilography. It also has a list of manufacturers & suppliers of glass engraving equipment that is quite useful . All round, an excellent addition to a glass engravers library, or for anyone with an interest in glass & galssware.

About the Author
Jeff has been involved in factoring since 1994. He writes a monthly column on small receivables for The American Cash Flow Journal, a national publication of the American Cash Flow Association, and is a regular speaker at the ACFA’s annual Cash Flow conventions. His company, Dash Point Financial Services, Inc. purchases invoices of several small businesses. He provides numerous resources and consulting services for people interested in becoming small factors, and he is the author of several books including Factoring Small Receivables.

Factoring Fundamentals - The epitome of good advice

Factoring Fundamentals by Jeff Callender is the ultimate guide to the world of Small Factors. It describes in vivid detail the opportunities and risks one will encounter in this line of business. Furthermore - and perhaps even more importantly - it helps you understand how to capitalize on these opportunities and manage the risks in the most appropriate manner.
The book highlights and explains the "how to's" and the "do's & don'ts" of Factoring in plain English and leaves the reader with a thorough understanding of what this business is all about, what to expect, and how to succeed.
Based on his own long-standing experience as a Small Factor, Jeff shares his vast learning and outstanding personal expertise, including the conceptual constructs behind the business together with the necessary processes and procedures. He even provides invaluable hands-on advice and his own financial calculations on how to run this business successfully.
But Jeff does not stop there. He kicks it up a notch by even including a section for "self-assessment". This section lets you analyze whether Factoring provides the right environment for you, and whether you have got what it takes to make Factoring an enjoyable business for you to excel in.
Factoring Fundamentals is written in an illustrative, no-nonsense, easy to read style that - in conjunction with the book's captivating contents - actually makes it a real page-turner. Once you start reading, you will want to finish it in one go. And how often can one honestly say this about a business or educational publication?
In the end, I am happy to say that Jeff's Factoring Fundamentals have even played some sort of a Godfathering role in helping us get our own small-business-funding corporation off the ground successfully. Without his numerous insights and golden nuggets of priceless advice, we could have easily overlooked some of the crucial details. Today I am very glad we didn't.
But regardless of whether or not one finally decides to enter the arena of Factoring, Factoring Fundamentals should be top of the must-read list for anybody who even toys with the idea of becoming a Small Factor, or who simply wants to learn the basics about a very rewarding business niche that not too many people know much about.

good book great series

This is part of a four book series where the author tells all about the factoring business. This is the first in the series but, I have to admit, I read the case studies book first. If you want to know why you should read that review.

While this book did not answer all my questions, (I have two more to read anyway) it did a great job in answering questions that I had not thought of yet. He is very clear, and does not go over and over the same material. The best parts of the book are not where he tells you what factoring is and how it works. No, by far the best parts are in two other areas; analyzing if you are right for this business and suggestions for how to learn the business without losing your shirt.

While analyzing if you would be good in this business Jeff lists all the attributes that would help you, and some that might be a problem. Good things to have are people skills, determination, enough math to know if you are making any money, and attention to detail. Surprisingly a large bank account is not on this list, which brings us to the other best part of the book.

Jeff says a large bank account can be a hindrance because you are tempted to jump in the deep end before you know how to dog paddle. Starting with a small amount of money, and one or two clients lets you learn the business and lets you get your rules and processes in place before you go full time.

Not only can this be a good paying part time business, the author suggests, recommends, and encourages you to do this part time while you learn the business. Sounds good to me.

Great book for managers

This book gives an overview of how factoring works and the lingo. This book could be helpful to business owners/managers looking for cash. Its important that the managers/owners understand that cashflow is important and how factoring (often viewed as expensive). Actually is required sometimes to recieve funds for growth. Sometimes manager's and owner's have a hard time understanding that rapid growth causes a cash flow pinch and can be dire. They view the interest as excessive but is generally better then a loan. A loan shows on the books and can bring down company valuations, increase your debt ratio and hamper any future loans you may require.
