Topics include the use of religious lyrics and tables of lessons as indirect rebuttals of Wycliffite claims; the social networks through which dissenters transmitted their ideas; dissenting and mainstream readings of Scripture; the 'survival' of Wycliffism in the run-up to Henry VIII's reformation; and the fate of Wyclif and Wycliffism in later historiography. Another version of Lucan

If I had known it was another translation of Lucan, I would not have ordered it, BUT I would have made a mistake. This work has a better translation for the modern reader, and lots of good supporting information. Some of the comparisons I made with other versions make me wish I had this ten years ago. The notes are worth the price of the book!

"Gore, War, and Monumental Verse"

Lucan, the author of the full-throated but incomplete epic the "Civil War", certainly deserves a spot next to the great Latin poets Ovid, Horace, and Virgil, whose epic works mark the pinnacle eloquence and intelligence of Latin verse. The epic was written during the reign of Nero in the first century AD, and it is characterized by its vehement condemnation of civil war and imperialistic sentiments--this possibly caused Lucan's later fall out of Nero's favor. The primary characters in the epic are Julius Caesar, who is portrayed as a destructive warmonger, and Pompey (Magnus), who is described as ambitious and over his prime. The vivid descriptions of the wars in this work are exciting and at the same time sobering since Lucan's narrative never fails to reveal those attributes of civil war which invoke the most disturbing of feelings. For all this, Lucan's "Civil War" is recommended, and also because the Oxford World Classics always present reliable translations, and this particular edition retains Lucan's charming and long-winded verse that courses so smoothly through the hearts and minds reader's who are fortunate enough to come into contact with it.

Braund's Translation of the Text is Excellent

There are not many translations of Lucan's Civil War, sometimes titled Pharsalia.Susan H Braund's translation of Lucan's Civil War is a great translation. Lucan's Civil War is a work from the time of Nero and is incomplete due to the authors death. Nonetheless it is a great epic that is quite different from the others. It takes on a grotesque tone with descriptions of battles and descriptions of ghosts and witches. It takes place during the Civil War that saw Caesar rise to power and does not hide who Lucan supports. Some of the poetic use is lost in this translation due to its translation to Latin but it makes up for this with its explicit character. Braund captures the heterodox Stoicism that underlies the text and makes it appear not just in the overarching story but in the characters as they relate to each other. Passive Aggressive tones are captured just as well as the sense of foreboding and pessimism the text expresses.

Best study aid for CivPro!

I've had the pleasure of learning CivPro from Prof. Janssen and this study aid is exactly how he teaches his class. Once you get used to reading logic maps and following the flow of it, this study aid helps the most when you have a general idea of what is going on in CivPro but it would benefit you to organize your thoughts. If this aid doesn't do it for you, I suggest trying again because you really only need basic knowledge of the course and this makes everything seem so much more simple and realistic than what you'll encounter in any other study aid or class room. I just wish all the other law school courses had this type of book!

1L first semester this is a fantastic book

If you're a visual person, this is for you. Some of the charts are out of date, but that's OK. It'll take you through an entire flowchart and then you'll hit an out of date "square." Overall, it's a good flowchart way through Civ Pro. I used it both semesters. It does not have much in the way of some of the FRCP Rules on discovery. It's more of a bigger picture book.

Armed with a camera and a keen eye, Steltzer went hunting in the Northern Arctic and captured on film a father-and-son team engaged in the ancient and fascinating Inuit art of igloo building. Each turn of the page reveals another step in the process, from pacing off a circle to the secret of the sturdy design (the blocks of snow are placed in an ascending spiral) as well as the finishing touches-such amenities as a window made of ocean ice and a "porch" for storage space. The crisp lines of snow and shadow are enhanced rather than diminished by Steltzer's medium (black-and-white photography); linked with the lean but informative prose, the end result is dramatic in its simplicity. Grade 3-6?A curious book with interesting black-and-white photographs, but little explanation of igloo construction, appearing here 14 years after its publication in Canada. The text states, regarding choice of ice from the ocean for a windowpane, "it gives much light to the inside, a strange blue-green light like that surrounding a swimmer under water." The black-and-white photos lose that and the sense of "whiteness" that makes Arctic regions so vivid. Bonnie Shemie's Houses of Snow, Skin and Bones (Tundra, 1989) does a much more thorough job of describing the construction of and living in snow houses, but has fewer illustrations. Charlotte and David Yue's The Igloo (Houghton, 1988) is more in-depth for a slightly older audience. All three titles emphasize that most Inuit no longer live in igloos but use the structure only while hunting or for winter survival. Gr. 4^-6, younger for reading aloud. Originally published in Canada, this book has simple power and great child appeal. An honest essay introduces the Inuit culture and their tradition of making homes out of snow. On the following pages are black-and-white photos of startling composition and quality that picture Tookillkee Kiguktak and his son Jopee demonstrating the building of an igloo. With a carpenter saw to cut snow into large bricks and a long knife for cutting and shaping, Tookillkee carefully builds the structure up and around himself, locking himself in. He then cuts a door, adds a chimney (so the roof won't melt), and cuts a window: "He has chosen a piece of ice from the ocean for a windowpane. It gives much light to the inside, a strange blue-green light like that surrounding a swimmer under water." Finally, he builds a porch. Each step in the process is accompanied by a photo, and it is tremendously interesting to see the builders smooth and shape the growing structure. The book ends with a picture of the finished igloo and a shot from the inside looking out at the frozen landscape. The photos and text work together beautifully to capture the essence of the story: the father and son are at peace with their environment, have come to know its beauty, and will pass on their knowledge from one generation of Inuit to the next. beautiful, informative, for all ages

This lovely book reveals the igloo-building process through striking black & white photos and a simple, clear narrative. I recently obtained this book for use with a group of four-year-olds. The book was a hit with the kids, and to my surprise, I enjoyed it even more than they did. The high contrast, sharply detailed photos show just how these fascinating structures go together. The pictures and narrative both communicate respect for the skill and hard work of the Inuit builders, a father-and-son team. I heartily recommend this book to teachers, parents, and children, and also to those interested in documentary photography.

Great as an Interactive Text For Young Children

This is an interesting book for 3rd or 4th grade children, but the book really shines at a much younger age. This would be a good book for parents to read to children. The book shows a father and son working together in a harsh environment. Although photographed in black & white, the pictures are artistic and carry the theme faithfully. Nearly every page could be a conversation piece. The child will come away with new information that may remain in the consciousness for years and the parent will come away from a time of conversational bonding.
