While most modern mysteries set in Alaska concentrate on the damage done to the ecology or the strange personalities who take refuge in this arctic vastness, Sue Henry's books are more straightforward and usually more fun. In such stories as Deadfall and the Anthony Award-winning Murder on the Iditarod Trail, Henry follows in the sled and snowshoe tracks of writers like Jack London and Robert W. Service, who realized that Alaska was the last great frontier of adventure. Her characters, like champion sled-dog racer Jessie Arnold, are welcome throwbacks to a simpler period when physical challenge was a healthy way to measure self-esteem.

Jessie is testing herself in the thousand-mile Yukon Quest race, which follows the old mail trail from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, when one of the other racers is kidnapped and held for ransom. The kidnappers insist that only Jessie can deliver the money, and it has to be on the most dangerous leg of the race. Any attempt to involve the police will result in the victim's death. Of course, the worst blizzard of the year blows up just as the race gets to that point, and it goes without saying that Jessie risks herself and her beloved dog team to recover the victim and capture the bad guys. Even if the thought of somebody shouting "Mush!" fills you with silent laughter, you're sure to be gripped by Henry's ability to recreate the pleasures and perils of an arcane sport in a breathtaking landscape. --Dick Adler

Alaska's spectacular, dangerous wilderness forms the background to Henry's engaging, if overplotted, sixth novel (after Deadfall). Professional musher Jessie Arnold is in peril, this time on the Yukon Quest, "the toughest dogsled race in the world," which runs over 1000 miles from Whitehorse, Canada, to Fairbanks, Alaska. Early in the race, novice musher Debbie Todd is captured and held for $200,000 ransom. The kidnappers demand that Debbie's frantic stepfather give Jessie the money for delivery during the race, warning them both that Debbie will die if they inform the police. But Jessie secretly notifies her good friend, Inspector Charles Delafosse, before she tackles the race's most demanding leg. In a climactic finish, Jessie almost loses her life when she confronts the criminals on American Summit during a blinding blizzard. Throughout this turmoil, Jessie is also trying to sort out her feelings for her lover, State Trooper Alex Jensen, who's at his father's funeral in Idaho. Henry decorates her novel with glorious evocations of Alaska, believable characters, interesting mushing lore and deft explanations of dogsledding mechanics. But the story suffers from a thin plot that leans on obvious clues and unlikely coincidences. Nonetheless, dog lovers will enjoy it, as will those willing to forgive the faults in construction in favor of some beautiful writing. Agent, Dominick Abel. (July)

Go to the dogs, sled style with a mystery

Another good sled dog racing tale by ann author who knows her region and makes the background real. If you are a long distance race fan, you won't be able to find many slip-ups in her description of the race from a musher's point of view. The mystery is absorbing and kept me guessing although I am a bigger sled dog than mystery fan. The characters have depth and realism, no stereotypes, and the subtle romance works well.

Another winner from Sue Henry!

I discovered Sue Henry only a few months ago and devoured all her books in a short period of time. I read them in almost one sitting.
Ms. Henry's books concentrate on Alaskan history and an environment few of us can imagine, fabulous characters, and page-turning mystery and excitement. I find that I'm torn between Evelyn Wood-ing it to find out what happens and re-reading passages again and again because of the flow of the words and the descriptive phrases and language.
Jessie Arnold is taking her team on the Yukon Quest this year, instead of the familiar Iditarod. The Yukon Quest is run shortly before the Iditarod and she's decided to try the race from Canada into Fairbanks, Alaska. It's earlier in the year, the trail is rougher and the conditions harsher, but she's eagerly up to the challenge.
Racing, or involved behind-the-scenes, are several friends and acquaintances, legends and loners. It's exciting when you realize that this race, like the Iditarod, honors people who forged this area for the rest of us. A wonderful mix of history and current events, the race gets going and a novice racer is kidnapped and Jessie is singled out by the kidnappers to be the go-between.
Plus, Jessie's got her own personal problems to sort out. Gee, as if running the race for the first time weren't enough to deal with!
I love this book and was truly sorry to get to the end of it. July 5th can't come fast enough for me - that's when Ms. Henry's next book comes out.

Leaves You Wanting More

Ms. Henry is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Beginning with Murder On The Iditarod Trail, her tales of life and death in Alaska have never failed to impress me. In this story, Jessie Arnold is once again testing herself and her dogs on a long and difficult race, the Yukon Quest. The courage and stamina needed for such an endeavor is brought vividly to life by Sue Henry. The mystery, although a good one, is almost secondary to the wonderful descriptions of the snow covered wilds of Alaska. It leaves you wanting more.

About the Author

James Corner Field Operations is an award-winning, international landscape architecture, urban and public realm design firm based in New York City. The practice is renowned for strong contemporary design across a variety of project types and scales, from large urban districts and complex post-industrial sites, to small well-crafted, detail design projects. James Corner is recipient of the National Design Award and the Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award, among others.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts and the performing arts. The firm established its identity through theoretical and self-generated projects before coming to international prominence through projects such as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the recently opened Broad Museum. Coming from someone who helped write a book on the High Line, this book is my favorite High Line book since Joel Sternfeld's book Walking The High Line. It captures the essence of the whole project from past to present to future.

The High Line is a visually exciting and intriguing view of preservation in NYC. It presents the development of a natural area of NYC, where trains blew soot and men left human castoffs to accumulate. Some professors in architectural schools in the City dreamed their students would enjoy working on this mile and one-half line where rotting rail ties gave food for bugs and birds, and plants, and grasses, and insects and birds came to live and propagate. Joshua David and Robert Hammond felt called to save the High Line for the people of NYC. Their passion and entrepreneurial spirit, and their innocence about the amount of effort needed to bring this about fueled this project and brought many people and organizations together. Most noteworthy, I believe, was the role of the then Commissioner of City Planning, Amanda Burden an advocate for the project. The project took ten years. This book documents all the "ups and downs," the tears and joys, and finally the great sense of accomplishment. Now there was a place on the west side of Manhattan where city dwellers could walk, sit and read, enjoy the flowers and grasses, and quiet found here.
Pictures of its development are engrossing. Everything was photographed from its dying grasses, to its abandoned children’s carts and toys to its polluted soil. Reports of phases of the project are included, as well as summaries of reports, pictures of the stages of clean-ups and planting of grasses, and of workers with their long shadows as the day lengthens. Other countries are planning their own high-lines reusing post-industrial infrastructure.
Amazon has given us an excellent price for this wonder. For those of us who love the City, it is a treasure as is its reality.

About the Author
Ron E. M. Clouzet is director of the NAD Evangelism Institute (NADEI), professor of Christian Ministry and Pastoral Theology at the SDA Theological Seminary at Andrews University, and field secretary of the North American Division. Born and raised in Argentina, Dr. Clouzet is finishing postdoctoral research in Systematic Theology from the University of South Africa, studying the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the writings and experience of Ellen G. White. Dr. Clouzet is married to Lisa Clouzet and they have three young-adult children, Christoffer, Alexander, and Stefani.

One of the Best Books I've Read in awhile!

This book is absolutely spot on. Our Denomination's greatest need is for the Holy Spirit. The author early in this book got me to thinking, "The Holy Spirit is WITH us, but is He IN us? Something that really turned my head inside out. I got to thinking about it and all my life I've been confident the Holy Spirit is with me, but He wasn't IN me. Now I know why, thanks to this book and Dr. Clouzet.

I will spend time praying for the Holy Spirt to be IN me and to help me to love others as Christ loves us. I've been way too selfish for way too long. It's time for a change and I'm going to ask God for it.

Dr. Clouzet has chapters on various topics like speaking in tongues, etc that tie in with the concept of the Holy Spirit. Every chapter has a true story of a missionary or someone who was affected by the Holy Spirit. One gripping story is about a woman who was married to an abusive spouse. She nearly divorced him but was encouraged to pray for the Holy Spirit. She did for 3 months and things got worse but then one day it changed and got better. One year later, her husband had totally changed and their marriage was in good shape. Then the grandmother came to watch over their 6-month old son while she (wife) and her husband went out on a date and accidentally left the cap off of her prescription drugs. The baby boy managed to find the pills and swallowed all of them. He didn't make it. The family was devastated and the husband ran away leaving her to grieve on her own. She was reluctant to pray but she did and after a month the husband came back to give her support and the whole family - her parents and her in-law's all became Christians because they saw how the Holy Spirit was working in her.

There are several other awesome stories in the book that made my hair stand on my head; but I'll let you buy the book and enjoy reading it.

Many good spiritual insights into the necessity for the Holy Spirit to energize and galvanize the Christian church. The book is filled with practical suggestions into how the church can give greater emphasis to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Very good book on the subject.

So much wrong...

I don't mind fluffy throw away books. They can be fun. I can overlook it if the author gets easy spelling and grammar wrong every few pages; retched for wretched or 'do embroider' instead of 'do embroidery'. I can overlook getting the date of an invention wrong if it's not too out of period but easy, daily trans-Atlantic telephone calls thirty years before they were even possible is stretching it. I can gloss over weird name spellings - Hannish? Hamish, Donnel? Donal, Leezil? Lisl or Eliza or Elizabeth maybe… McKenna? Wait! What? McKenna? Why would a Scottish girl in 1899 have an Irish surname for her Christian name? - if they don't constantly drag me out of the story. I like getting a lot of history in my reading but not when it means I have to read the book with an open browser window on a search engine because most of the book is striking me as, "that's not right!" and when I look it up I see the author did get it wrong. I can understand an author being confused by British peerages and title usage, but not when that's a main component of the plot. The frankly ignorant way people are addressed in this book was constant source of irritation. A Duke ought to have at least a passing acquaintance that DeBrett's Peerage *exists* and not think it would be a really good idea if someone came up with a list of legitimate English peers! Obviously stereotyped characters don't usually bother me in this kind of book. Calling the characters in this book 'stereotyped' would be giving them a depth of character they didn't deserve. They are flatter and far less nuanced than merely stereotyped. Simple plots are usually not a deal breaker but so little happened in this novel and what little did happen was telegraphed chapters before. I just had to plod through a lot of words to see the obvious play out. After chapter 5, I just skimmed the rest in about 10 minutes because my eyes were bleeding at the inanity. Any individual flaw would not make the book a bad one. Any two or even three flaws would be OK. This one book had ALL of the flaws and nothing that made reading it a worthwhile use of my time.

Great Summer Read!

If you are looking for a historical romance with fully developed characters, and without graphic sex scenes, you will enjoy Marblestone Mansion. The author does a good job at describing the setting of the story, without overdoing it. Some authors get carried away with descriptive scenes, making you skim over paragraphs. It was a good balance and comfortable read.

I liked how she visualized the story in her mind, and was able to convey the scenes and setting with her words.

I really didn't intend to read the story when I did, as I only had my iPod. But I was bored one afternoon, and started reading it. I got immediately into the story. This is one book in a series, and I am looking forward to reading the next one.

I've read literally hundreds of romances over the years - and this book holds its own with all those traditionally published works. Good Job.

Comfortable, Enjoyable, and senseable

I got this book yesterday, and finished it last night. It had a little of Colorado history, and vivid descriptions of the surroundings, so much so, that I thought I could help them decorate! It was a non-profane, non-smutty love story. I love those and they are hard to find. It seems too many authors think no one has ever had sex before, so they believe it to be their job to describe every single detail of the act. Which I find discusting. I have an imagination...let me use it...
I loved the characters. They were relateable. My heart broke for the Duke, and his horrible choice of a wife. I too, loved Sassy. All the characters just seemed to blend together effortlessly. It is a stress free comfortable read. I also had an overwhelming urge to slap the Duchess! I will continue to the next in this series. Completely enjoyable.

This book is written primarily for Jungian psychologists (analytical psychologists) in a laudable and overdue attempt to integrate what is valuable from psychoanalysis into that field. In addition, the book could be of use to those interested in the broad influence of psychoanalysis and, more especially, to analysts with a transpersonal interest who wish to read something that will provoke thought. Sedgwick is to be commended for raising many issues of significance to those interested in both writers and in the history and growth of psychoanalytic and analytic psychology movements.
